The east London and south-west Essex corridor — covering Wanstead, Woodford, Buckhurst Hill and Chigwell — has one of the strongest 11+ traditions in the country. Families here are typically targeting either independent day schools (Forest School, Chigwell School, Bancroft's) or the highly competitive grammar schools of Redbridge, Essex and south-east London.
The grammar school 11+ in this region uses both GL Assessment and CEM-style papers, with emphasis on verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning and comprehension. Many families prepare for both the grammar and independent school exams simultaneously — similar skills are required, but independent school papers tend to go deeper on Maths and English writing.
The tutors listed below work regularly in E11, E18, IG8, IG9 and IG10. Many are former teachers with deep familiarity with the specific papers sat by Redbridge, Barking & Dagenham and Essex grammar schools.

The most popular targets in this area are Ilford County High (boys), Woodford County High (girls), Valentines High and the Essex grammar schools including King Edward VI Chelmsford. Competition is extremely high — pass rates can be under 10% of applicants. Preparation typically begins in Year 4 and intensifies in Year 5.
What is the difference between GL Assessment and CEM?
GL Assessment papers are more traditional — separate tests for verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, Maths and English. CEM (used by many Essex schools) blends skills within longer papers and includes a wider vocabulary component. A good tutor will be familiar with both formats and adapt practice accordingly.
My child is Year 5 and we've only just started — is it too late?
Not necessarily. Many children make rapid progress with intensive one-to-one support in Year 5. The key is to assess honestly where the gaps are (usually verbal reasoning or comprehension) and work systematically through them. Summer of Year 5 is often the most productive period for focused preparation.
